Beard Care 101: A New York Climate Guide

If your beard feels rough and looks dull by mid-afternoon, you're not alone. New York does it differently from a dry climate: damp wind outside, dry central heating indoors, and your beard swings between the two all day. The fix isn't expensive product, it's the right two minutes every morning.

The two-minute routine

  1. Cleanse, don't strip. Sulfate-free beard wash every other day. Daily washing dries the skin underneath and triggers the itch you keep blaming on the beard.
  2. Oil while damp. 3 to 4 drops of beard oil, work from the skin out. Damp hair pulls oil deeper than dry hair.
  3. Brush, then balm. Boar bristle from the skin down. Pea-sized balm for the last 20 seconds to shape.

What the climate does

Cold, wet winters and overheated rooms are a hard combination. Without oil your beard will look sparser than it is, single hairs split and frizz independently instead of moving as a unit.

Product, briefly

Argan and jojoba are the closest oils to your skin's natural sebum. Avoid coconut oil, which can clog follicles, and anything with alcohol, which is drying. Our Cedar & Smoke oil checks both boxes.
